Wellington is set to embark on a transformative multi-year stormwater infrastructure improvement project aimed at modernizing its flood protection system. Village Manager Jim Barnes announced the initiative during a recent Village Council Directions Workshop, emphasizing the critical need to upgrade aging stormwater pump stations that are vital for flood control and environmental protection.
The project will focus on enhancing the efficiency of the ACME Improvement District's network of pump stations, which play a crucial role in managing stormwater and ensuring compliance with state and federal environmental regulations. The proposed upgrades target pump stations 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9, which serve key municipal, residential, and commercial areas, including public safety facilities and schools.

The upgrades will include critical electrical and mechanical enhancements, the installation of energy-efficient systems, and improvements to the trash rack systems to ensure reliable operation during heavy rainfall.
Barnes highlighted the importance of these upgrades not only for flood protection but also for maintaining water quality, particularly given Wellington's proximity to the Everglades ecosystem. The stormwater system is designed to capture, store, and treat stormwater before it is discharged into regional water bodies, aligning with long-term restoration goals for the Everglades.
The village plans to include this infrastructure improvement program in the upcoming fiscal year 2026 budget and is exploring additional funding opportunities to support the initiative. By bundling these critical upgrades into a phased approach, Wellington aims to manage costs effectively while minimizing disruptions to the community.
As the project moves forward, it promises to enhance operational efficiency, reduce flood risks, and strengthen Wellington's stormwater management system, safeguarding the community for years to come.
