Miracle League Arlington celebrates 20 years of inclusive baseball for children with disabilities

The Arlington Independent School District (AISD) Board of Trustees convened on April 3, 2025, to discuss various topics impacting the district and its students. The meeting highlighted significant achievements in athletics, community programs, and recognition of dedicated individuals.

The session began with Mr. Wilbanks commending the district's natatorium, emphasizing its role in providing water safety programs for economically disadvantaged third graders. He noted that these initiatives are crucial for saving lives, as many students lack access to swimming facilities. Mr. Wilbanks also celebrated the opening day of the Miracle League Arlington, which has provided children and young adults with disabilities the opportunity to play baseball for 20 years. He acknowledged the community's support and the efforts of volunteers, including Mindy Schutte, the new executive director.

Following Mr. Wilbanks, Ms. Haynes reported on the recent district golf tournament, where both girls' and boys' teams competed over two days. The Martin girls' team emerged as district champions, with Lamar and Sam Houston close behind. On the boys' side, Lamar took the top spot, followed by two teams from Martin. Individual accolades went to Sofia and Matthew, who were recognized as the top female and male golfers, respectively. Ms. Haynes expressed gratitude to the coaches and community members who supported the tournament, highlighting the often-overlooked nature of high school golf.

In a moment of recognition, Ms. Haynes presented Trustee Fowler with a PTA extended service award during the Council of PTAs Founders Day celebration. This award honors individuals who have significantly contributed to the PTA's mission within the district.

The meeting concluded with a sense of pride in the district's accomplishments and a commitment to continue fostering community engagement and student success. The board plans to follow up on these initiatives in future meetings, ensuring that the needs of all students are met.
