Bel Air Council approves new trampoline park at former Pep Boys location

The Bel Air Planning Commission convened on April 3, 2025, to discuss a significant proposal that could reshape local recreational options. The commission reviewed a request from Active Play Adventures Bel Air LLC to transform an existing Pep Boys location into an indoor trampoline park, marking a notable shift in the use of the space.

The proposed amusement center will occupy approximately 13,674 square feet of the former auto sales area, with plans for a small mezzanine to serve as a party area. This development comes after the Pep Boys retail portion has been closed for several years, indicating a need for revitalization in the area.

Key to the proposal is the adjustment of parking requirements. The trampoline park will necessitate 68 parking spaces, while the existing mattress store and auto service will require additional spaces. The total parking demand is calculated at 123 spaces, which exceeds the current provision of 117 spaces on-site. However, the applicant has presented a study suggesting that the peak parking demands for the different uses will not overlap significantly, allowing for shared parking solutions.

The commission noted that the Bel Air Police Department and Harford County Public Schools had reviewed the proposal and raised no concerns. The project aims to enhance community recreational options while addressing existing parking challenges through strategic planning.

In addition to the trampoline park, the proposal includes landscaping improvements, such as the planting of additional trees and shrubs to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the site and buffer the parking area from the roadway.

As the commission moves forward with this proposal, it reflects a broader commitment to revitalizing local spaces and providing residents with more recreational opportunities.
