The Socorro City Council has taken a significant step towards improving sewer services for local residents by approving a fee waiver for the Lower Valley Water District's excavation permit related to the Bovee sewer extension project. During a special meeting on April 3, 2025, the council unanimously agreed to waive the $1,433.75 permit fee and cover an estimated $2,425 in paving cut repairs, facilitating the installation of sewer services for five families who have long relied on septic systems.
City Planner Lorraine Kimito presented the request, emphasizing the project's importance in providing essential sewer services to residents who have never had access to such utilities. The excavation work will involve approximately 85 square feet, and the Lower Valley Water District is undertaking the project in-house, significantly reducing costs compared to retail estimates of $340,000.
