Richmond launches Orchard for All to distribute 400 fruit trees annually for food security

Richmond's fight against food insecurity took a significant step forward at the recent Richmond Rising Collaborative Stakeholder Committee meeting, where the "Orchard for All" initiative was unveiled. This ambitious project aims to distribute 400 fruit trees annually over the next five years, targeting areas in Richmond that need fresh produce the most.

The program has already made strides, with 100 trees distributed and 30 planted since its inception. Apprentices from a recently concluded training program played a crucial role in executing a successful fruit tree giveaway event, gaining hands-on experience in environmental justice, tree care, and harvesting techniques. With 300 trees still available for distribution, the team is actively working from their North Richmond farm site to ensure these trees reach the community.

In addition to the orchard initiative, the VeggieRx project is making waves by promoting healthier eating habits. A recent climate-friendly diet workshop was held, and plans are in place for more workshops in the coming months. This project collaborates with local health clinics, allowing doctors to prescribe produce bags to patients at risk of food-related diseases, fostering a community focused on nutrition and wellness.

With a budget of approximately $2.5 million remaining for these initiatives, Richmond is poised to continue its efforts in combating food insecurity and promoting sustainable practices. The next steps include further tree distributions and upcoming workshops aimed at enhancing community health through better dietary choices.
