The Clay County School District celebrated notable achievements during its April 3rd Regular School Board Meeting, highlighting the accomplishments of students in various areas, including Black History Month and academic excellence.
Superintendent David Broski opened the meeting by recognizing Kiani McCown, a fifth grader from Tynes Elementary School, who won a prestigious essay contest held by Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis. Kiani's essay on civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune earned her a two-year scholarship, making her one of only two elementary winners in Florida. This recognition not only honors Kiani's hard work but also emphasizes the importance of Black history education in the community.
The meeting also honored Nevin Luna, a student from Oakleaf Junior High, with an Outstanding Citizenship Award. Nevin demonstrated remarkable composure and quick thinking when he helped a child who had been struck by a car, showcasing the character and responsibility that the school district aims to instill in its students.
In addition to these recognitions, the board acknowledged five students from the district who were named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. This prestigious designation is awarded to the top 1% of high school students nationwide, with only 16,000 semifinalists selected from over 1.3 million test-takers. The recognition of these students, including Tristan Dukes from Keystone Heights High School, Ezra Garrison from Fleming Island High School, and Ramon Morales from Ridgeview High School, highlights the academic excellence present in Clay County. The National Merit program not only honors these students but also opens doors to significant scholarship opportunities, including the Benaquisto Scholarship, which can cover tuition costs at state universities.
The meeting underscored the district's commitment to celebrating student achievements and fostering a supportive educational environment. As the school year progresses, the district looks forward to continuing to recognize and support the accomplishments of its students, reinforcing the community's dedication to education and civic responsibility.
