Taunton Area School to Career Program Expands Opportunities for Local Youth
The Taunton Area School to Career (TASC) program is set to enhance its offerings significantly, following a recent presentation to the Taunton School Committee. Program Director Brian Hannon outlined ambitious plans to increase career development opportunities for local high school students, particularly those from underserved backgrounds.
Hannon emphasized the importance of experiential learning, detailing how TASC connects students with local employers through internships, job shadows, and career counseling. The program aims to bridge the gap between education and the workforce, providing students with essential skills and real-world experience. This year, TASC has already facilitated 66 paid internships, a notable increase from previous years, despite facing a reduction in state funding.
A key highlight of the meeting was the announcement of a new community business relations coordinator position, which will be shared with the Taunton Area Chamber of Commerce. This role is expected to strengthen partnerships with local businesses and enhance job placement opportunities for students.
The committee also discussed the ongoing success of the YouthWorks program, which serves at-risk youth by providing them with paid internships and essential job readiness training. Hannon noted that the program has successfully placed 58 youth in jobs this year, demonstrating its effectiveness in supporting students who face barriers to employment.
In addition to these initiatives, TASC is planning a series of workshops focused on financial literacy, mental health, and entrepreneurship, aimed at empowering students to achieve their career goals. These workshops will be integrated into the after-school mentoring program, which has already seen participation from over 100 students this year.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue expanding TASC's reach and resources, ensuring that all students have access to valuable career development opportunities. As the program moves forward, it aims to foster a more inclusive environment that supports the diverse needs of Taunton's youth, ultimately preparing them for successful futures in the workforce.
