Community Leaders Criticize Commissioner Knapper's Shift to Sports Tourism in Scottsbluff County

Lisa Betts Marquez, a tourism stakeholder and owner of Peaceful Prairie Campsites, voiced strong opposition to Commissioner Charlie Knapper's push for a shift from leisure tourism to tournament-based sports tourism. Marquez argued that this change threatens the county's cultural identity and economic diversity, jeopardizing established attractions like the Riverside Discovery Center and the Midwest Theater. She accused Knapper of unprofessional behavior and abuse of power, particularly in his treatment of suspended tourism director Brenda Lice, who had advocated for the successful leisure tourism model.

Marquez urged the commissioners to remove Knapper from his role as tourism liaison and to investigate allegations of retaliation against Lice. She emphasized that the integrity of the county's tourism leadership is at stake, stating, "If Scottsbluff County staff are not safe from retaliation when they express legitimate concerns, it is inappropriate to retain Commissioner Knapper in this role."
