Kansas City prepares for 2026 World Cup with 6 games and 2 million visitors

The City of Independence is gearing up for a monumental event as it prepares to host matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a historic first for the tournament to be jointly held across three countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. During a recent city council meeting, officials highlighted the unprecedented scale of the upcoming World Cup. This will be the first time the tournament features 48 teams, expanded from 32, and will include 12 groups instead of the traditional 8. Over 39 days, a total of 104 matches will take place, significantly increasing the number of games compared to previous tournaments.

The influx of visitors is projected to exceed 650, with estimates suggesting around 2.1 million visitor days throughout the tournament.
