Elyria's athletic achievements took center stage at the recent Board of Education meeting, with a special recognition for Coach Brett Laring and his boys basketball team, who clinched the Southwestern Conference championship for the second consecutive year.
Coach Laring, a proud graduate of Elyria High School and head coach since 2009, was celebrated not only for leading his team to victory but also for breaking the school’s career wins record with 220 victories. This milestone was achieved during a game against Avon Lake on February 4, where the team triumphed 77-56.
The meeting highlighted the significance of this achievement, especially as the boys basketball team has only been part of the Southwestern Conference since 2021. Coach Laring expressed gratitude for the support from the community and acknowledged the hard work of his players, emphasizing their dedication over the past two years.
In addition to the boys basketball team, the meeting also recognized the girls wrestling team and the Lyric High School competitive cheerleading team, which placed fourth in the state. These accolades reflect Elyria's commitment to fostering a strong athletic program and celebrating student achievements.
As the school year progresses, the community looks forward to continued success from its talented athletes and coaches.
