Property owner urges action against drug-related issues in Kent's First Avenue area

Concerns over rising drug-related issues took center stage at the Kent City Council meeting on April 1, 2025, as a local property owner voiced urgent pleas for action. Speaking from the corner of First Avenue North and Meeker Street, the owner highlighted a troubling increase in drug activity and homelessness in the area, which has negatively impacted local businesses.

The property owner described a disturbing trend since 2019, noting an influx of individuals wandering and sleeping in alcoves, contributing to a sense of insecurity. "I come around and I pick up trash and I find lots of little pieces of aluminum foil, and I think that they are from fentanyl drugs," they stated, emphasizing the visible signs of drug use and the challenges faced in maintaining a safe environment for tenants.

The owner reported significant financial losses due to break-ins, costing thousands in repairs for glass doors and windows. "It's not good for Kent," they lamented, pointing out that the presence of drug users has deterred foot traffic and harmed local businesses.

In a heartfelt appeal, the property owner urged the council to prioritize the safety and well-being of the community, stating, "Please do take care of all of us, not just the poor drug people."
