Richardson Library celebrates National Library Week with updates and award recognition

During the Richardson City Council Work Session on April 7, 2025, the spotlight was on the Richardson Public Library as it celebrated National Library Week and shared significant updates on its ongoing initiatives and renovations.

Library representatives highlighted the theme of this year's National Library Week, "Drawn to the Library," which emphasizes the transformative role libraries play in communities. The library is encouraging residents to engage with its resources, including graphic novels and various creative activities. Notably, the library hosted a successful workshop with local author Andy Hirsch, attracting over 124 attendees, and a unique event where families read to miniature horses, drawing more than 100 participants.

In addition to these community events, the library received the prestigious Achievement of Excellence in Libraries award for the twentieth consecutive year, placing it among the top 19% of public libraries in Texas. This recognition is based on criteria that include community outreach, with the library participating in 57 events and reaching over 19,000 individuals in the past year. The library also reported impressive circulation figures, with over 834,000 items checked out, both physical and digital.

The library's commitment to innovation was evident with the introduction of a seed library, which has distributed over 4,300 seed packets to residents, promoting gardening and sustainability. Furthermore, the library continues to collaborate with local organizations to provide educational programs, including English as a second language classes and STEM events for children.

Looking ahead, the library is preparing for the reopening of its newly renovated space, which is expected to enhance the community's access to resources and services. As the city council moves into the budget development process, these updates underscore the library's vital role in fostering community engagement and supporting the city's goals for resident attraction and retention.
