Board to evaluate e-bike safety and usage in parks and trails

The Boca Raton City Council Workshop on April 7, 2025, focused on the regulation of electric bikes (e-bikes) and their safe use within the city. Council members discussed the benefits of e-bikes as an affordable and environmentally friendly mode of transportation, particularly for classes 1 and 2. However, concerns were raised about reckless usage, especially regarding e-motorbikes, which have been reported to be misused in certain areas.

Council member Mr. Thompson emphasized the importance of not restricting responsible e-bike users while addressing the need to manage those who operate them recklessly. He noted that many parks and shared paths, such as the one around the Spanish River athletic facilities, are suitable for e-bike use, and prohibiting them in these areas would be excessive.

To tackle the issue, the council proposed to task the Pedestrian and Bikeway Advisory Board with examining the safe use of e-bikes. Their focus will include identifying unsafe practices, promoting educational initiatives, and exploring enforcement strategies. The board will also look into best practices from other cities to enhance safety measures.

The council members expressed a consensus on the need for further discussion and collaboration with the advisory board to develop effective solutions. The meeting concluded with an agreement to inform the board of their new responsibilities regarding e-bike regulations.
