Cleveland West Conference honors basketball champions and standout track athletes

The Lakewood City Schools Board of Education convened on April 7, 2025, to discuss various topics, including grant funding, student achievements, and updates on school facilities. The meeting highlighted the collaborative efforts between the school district and local partners, as well as the accomplishments of student athletes.

The meeting began with Superintendent Nizwicki expressing gratitude for the ongoing partnership with Regency, which has facilitated significant funding for school programs. Over the past five years, the district has secured more than $7 million in grants, including $5.7 million specifically for the MEMS and welding programs. Nizwicki also mentioned the anticipation of a ribbon-cutting ceremony for upcoming projects and humorously noted the rising costs of baseballs lost to construction zones.

Following this, the board recognized the achievements of student athletes, particularly the boys basketball team, which won the first-ever Cleveland West Conference championship with a remarkable 13-1 record. Senior athlete Lucas Seguin was honored as the overall player of the year, and head coach Alex Camock received the coach of the year award.

The discussion then shifted to the track programs, which have seen significant growth. Coach Stephanie Toole highlighted the success of both the boys and girls teams, emphasizing their ability to attract new athletes despite national trends of declining participation. Notably, student athlete Sharian excelled in the state indoor track and field meet, finishing second in the long jump and qualifying for elite national championships.
