Pflugerville City officials are considering a specific use permit for a lounge at 701 West Pecan, a decision that has sparked significant community concern. The lounge, which would allow patrons to consume food, alcohol, and tobacco, is seeking approval due to its proximity to a church and a school, which raises questions about safety and neighborhood compatibility.

The property, currently zoned as General Business 1, has a history of lounge use but was deemed abandoned, necessitating the new permit application. According to city staff, the lounge meets the criteria for approval as it aligns with commercial land uses in the downtown district. However, the proposed location is only 90 feet from a residential area, falling short of the required 200-foot buffer from single-family homes, thus requiring the specific use permit.

During the public hearing, local residents voiced strong opposition. Chris Gary, a pastor at a nearby church, expressed concerns about the potential for increased alcohol-related incidents affecting families and children in the area. He urged the city to consider adopting a 300-foot buffer zone, similar to regulations in neighboring cities, to protect community members from the negative impacts of alcohol establishments near schools and churches.

Other residents echoed these sentiments, citing past experiences with noise and disturbances from nearby bars. Rhonda Flug, a former business owner in the area, highlighted the challenges of living next to multiple bars, emphasizing the need for a quieter, more family-friendly environment. Richard Halpin and his partner also raised concerns about safety, particularly regarding inebriated patrons navigating busy streets near the school.

In response to these community concerns, the city officials are tasked with weighing the potential benefits of the lounge against the expressed fears of local residents.
