North Kingstown plans new middle school with integrated pre-k facility and community focus

The North Kingstown School District is moving forward with plans for a new middle school that will include a dedicated pre-kindergarten facility, following discussions during the NKSD Building Subcommittee Meeting on April 7, 2025. The proposed design aims to enhance educational programming while maintaining cost efficiency and community integration.

Key to the project is the decision to potentially expand the building to three stories, which would allow for a more compact layout. This design strategy is intended to optimize space without sacrificing essential facilities, such as classrooms, a gym, and a cafeteria. The pre-kindergarten section will be designed as a separate entity within the same building footprint, which is expected to reduce construction costs compared to building a standalone facility.

The committee emphasized the importance of accommodating different schedules for the pre-kindergarten and middle school students to manage traffic and ensure safety during drop-off and pick-up times. Plans also include provisions for a playground for younger children, as well as maintaining existing sports fields and parking areas.
