A new project is set to transform the Meatpacking District just in time for Mother's Day weekend, as the Street Activities and Resiliency Committee of Manhattan CB2 discussed plans for a temporary structure in the Lower Plaza. This initiative, which will run from 10 AM to 6 PM over two days, aims to enhance community engagement with coffee tastings and flower giveaways, although the specific type of flowers is still being finalized.
The project is not a first for the organizers, who have previously erected similar structures across the country. They assured the committee that the setup will be mindful of noise and community concerns, emphasizing their commitment to being "good neighbors." The modular structure will be fabricated off-site and assembled on location, with plans to begin setup between 5 and 6 AM to allow for any last-minute adjustments.
While the committee expressed some concerns about the timing of the setup, the organizers were flexible, agreeing to potentially start later if needed. They also clarified that the structure will be located in the Lower Plaza, right in the heart of the area, and discussions are ongoing with local businesses about the placement of existing tables and umbrellas.
As the project moves forward, the committee remains focused on ensuring that community interests are prioritized, with further details expected as the event date approaches.
