Poughkeepsie School District anticipates budget impacts amid state aid uncertainty

The Wappingers Central School District (WCSD) Board of Education convened on April 7, 2025, to discuss the recommended budget for the upcoming fiscal year and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding state aid. The meeting began with President Mike McFarland acknowledging the presence of Dr. Watson from the Poughkeepsie Board of Education, celebrating recent awards received by local school districts, including Duchess BOCES and Wappingers.

Superintendent Darren Loma presented the second recommended budget, noting that it closely resembles the initial proposal but includes some updates. He expressed disappointment over the lack of a state budget, which has delayed the district's financial planning. Loma indicated that he hopes to have state aid figures by the next board meeting on April 22, which would allow for a more informed budget recommendation.

The proposed budget maintains educational programs and support services while implementing a tax levy increase of 1.4%, which is below the state tax cap of 1.57%. This increase is designed to minimize the financial burden on taxpayers, with plans to utilize $12.3 million from the general fund balance to offset the tax levy. Loma emphasized the importance of continuing to provide essential services, including mental health support and special education.

The budget discussions also highlighted the reliance on state aid, which currently accounts for 35.5% of the district's revenue. Loma expressed optimism that additional funding could be secured, which would further reduce the tax levy increase. He proposed that any additional state aid received be directed towards lowering the tax burden on residents.

The board is scheduled to vote on the budget on May 20, 2025, during a public session. The meeting concluded with a commitment to keep the community informed as new information regarding state funding becomes available.
