Salem Public Schools presents budget plan amid personnel cuts and increased costs

The Salem School Committee convened on April 7, 2025, to discuss the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The meeting focused on the financial outlook for Salem Public Schools, highlighting both personnel and non-personnel costs.

The budget presentation revealed a projected 16% increase in non-personnel costs compared to the previous year, while personnel costs are expected to rise by approximately 3%. This increase in personnel costs takes into account the planned reduction of 56.5 positions within the district. The discussion emphasized the importance of aligning budget cuts with the distribution of resources across various cost centers, which include Salem High School, the special education department, and Collins Middle School.

Salem High School emerged as the largest cost center, accounting for 28% of the school funding, followed by Collins Middle School at 16% and Witchcraft School at 10%.
