Montgomery County advocates seek full funding for parks and independent media

Montgomery County's recent council session spotlighted critical funding needs for local parks and community media, as advocates urged council members to prioritize essential services in the upcoming budget.

Mike Ricci, chair of the county's Recreation Parks Advisory Board, delivered a passionate plea for full funding of parks and recreation services. He emphasized that underfunding these programs threatens access and quality of life for residents, stating, "When you underfund parks and recreation, you are not cutting extras. You are cutting access, support, opportunity, and quality of life for our residents." Ricci invited council members to attend advisory board meetings to witness firsthand the dedication of staff who serve the community.

Tina Patterson, president of Montgomery Community Media, echoed the need for support, highlighting the organization's role in combating misinformation and providing vital local news coverage. She warned that without sustained investment, the county risks losing a crucial source of independent journalism that fosters transparency and public discourse. Patterson urged the council to support community media, which not only informs residents but also trains the next generation of media professionals.
