Sheriff highlights successful prison population management at county meeting

Morgan County officials are taking proactive steps to enhance local governance and public safety, as highlighted in the recent County Council meeting held on April 7, 2025. A key focus of the meeting was the commendable management of the county jail population, which has been effectively controlled thanks to the foresight of Sheriff David and collaborative efforts with the prosecutor's office and judges. Sheriff David noted that while Bayou County is currently transporting 30 prisoners daily to manage their overcrowding, Morgan County has successfully maintained a stable jail population, resulting in significant cost savings. In addition to discussions on jail management, the council addressed a salary ordinance amendment for the building inspector and code enforcement positions within the planning commission. Laura, a representative from the planning department, explained that the request for salary adjustments is aimed at addressing disparities in pay and ensuring that experienced personnel are retained. The council was informed that the new hires have already made significant progress in clearing a backlog of work, demonstrating their capability and efficiency.
