Broadband expansion took center stage at the St. Mary's County Commissioners meeting on April 8, 2025, as officials discussed plans to enhance internet connectivity across the region. Director of Information Technology Bob Kelly presented a request for the commissioners to sign letters of support for Comcast and Verizon, both of which are seeking federal funding through the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program.
Kelly highlighted that St. Mary's County is on track to achieve 99% coverage for wired broadband services by the end of spring, thanks to previous investments and initiatives. This expansion is a direct result of the county's commitment to improving internet access, which has included funding from the American Rescue Plan and state grants. The installation of Verizon Fios from Lexington Park to Ridge is expected to be completed soon, further enhancing service availability.

Kelly emphasized the importance of competition among internet service providers, noting that residents have long expressed a desire for more options. Currently, three providers—Breezeline, Comcast, and Verizon—are operating in the county, a significant improvement from previous years.
During the meeting, commissioners discussed how residents can determine which internet services are available in their neighborhoods. Kelly mentioned that a map on the county's website provides information on service areas, but acknowledged that updates on specific address availability are not always timely. He suggested that the county could enhance its website to include contact information for service providers, making it easier for residents to inquire about available options.
As St. Mary's County moves forward with its broadband initiatives, the support for Comcast and Verizon's applications could lead to even greater competition and improved internet access for residents, fulfilling a long-standing community need.
