They shared impressive data indicating that Sheridan Hills students are making substantial progress in language acquisition, with an average growth score of 77% on state assessments, significantly higher than the state average of 47%.
The presentation highlighted the school's wrap-around approach to education, which includes cultural celebrations and community connections. Students participate in activities that celebrate their heritage, such as creating displays of their home countries' flags and languages. This not only fosters a sense of belonging but also enhances their learning experience by valuing their linguistic backgrounds.
The board discussed the effectiveness of the "Win Time" model, which allows MLL teachers to provide targeted support without disrupting students' core curriculum. This model has reportedly improved student outcomes, with teachers collaborating closely to ensure that MLL students are integrated into mainstream classes while receiving the necessary language support.
In response to questions from board members, the educators emphasized the importance of maintaining a culturally responsive environment. They noted that integrating newcomers into diverse classrooms rather than grouping them together helps them adapt more effectively and fosters peer relationships.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue enhancing educational practices that support MLL students, ensuring that all students feel valued and empowered in their learning journeys.
