Artificial Intelligence (AI) is set to transform education in Rockingham County, as the Board of Education approved new guidelines aimed at integrating AI into the curriculum. During the December 9 meeting, educators emphasized the urgency of preparing students for a future where AI skills are essential for employment.

The guidelines, developed over the past year, focus on generative AI—technology capable of creating new ideas and information. A key point raised was the significant shift in the job market, with 66% of employers indicating they would not hire candidates lacking AI skills. Furthermore, 71% of leaders prefer less experienced candidates who are proficient in AI over more experienced ones without those skills.

The presentation highlighted the potential impact of AI on job availability, predicting a loss of 85 million jobs but also the creation of 97 million new roles that will require AI proficiency. This underscores the importance of equipping students with the necessary skills to thrive in an evolving workforce.

The guidelines propose a phased approach to AI education, starting with basic concepts for younger students and gradually introducing more complex applications as they progress through grades. For instance, kindergarteners will learn to differentiate between real and AI-generated content, while middle schoolers will engage with AI in a controlled manner, using targeted educational tools.
