The Rockingham County Board of Education meeting on November 20, 2024, highlighted significant improvements in the after-school and summer care programs, driven by recent fee increases and a stabilization grant.
Childcare specialist Miss Ward reported that registration fees for the programs rose by $20, with additional increases in supply fees and daily rates for before and after school care. Despite these hikes, Ward noted minimal pushback from parents, who largely anticipated the adjustments due to rising living costs. The new rates, effective since June, have positively impacted enrollment, particularly at Lincoln Elementary, which has seen a boost in participation.
Ward shared that the summer camp program thrived, generating $185,000 in revenue this year compared to $146,194 last summer. Activities included trips to the North Carolina Zoo and a county talent show, which were well-received by families. The October revenue for after-school care also saw a notable increase, jumping from $65,871 last year to $78,487 this year, reflecting the program's growing stability.
The stabilization grant has played a crucial role in enhancing the program's offerings, allowing for technology upgrades and staff incentives, which have been positively received. Overall, the meeting underscored the board's commitment to providing quality childcare services while maintaining financial stability.
