The Vigo County Council meeting on April 8, 2025, highlighted an ambitious new Riverfront Development Master Plan aimed at revitalizing the community's riverfront area. Lori Danielson, representing a coalition of stakeholders, presented the plan, which is a significant update to a previous version created in 2008. This initiative seeks to enhance economic growth, improve quality of life, and increase public access to the river.
The plan, developed in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and landscape architecture firm Stantec, has been informed by extensive community engagement. Over 1,500 residents participated in surveys and meetings, expressing strong enthusiasm for riverfront development. Key priorities identified include improved parks, open spaces, and enhanced transit and pedestrian infrastructure.

The plan outlines three main goals: stimulating economic development, ensuring sustainability, and providing safe access to the riverfront.
The proposed development area spans approximately 7,000 acres, with specific focus on three districts: the Gateway District, Community District, and River District. Each area is envisioned to host mixed-use developments, parks, and recreational spaces, fostering a vibrant community atmosphere.
To support the plan's implementation, the council is seeking adoption of a resolution that would serve as a guiding document for future development efforts. This resolution is crucial for attracting grant funding and encouraging private investment in the area.
Looking ahead, the council plans to establish an implementation team to ensure the plan is actively pursued rather than left on the shelf. A community rollout event is scheduled for April 23 at the Hohman Center to further engage residents and stakeholders in the development process.
The Riverfront Development Master Plan represents a significant step forward for Vigo County, aiming to transform the riverfront into a thriving hub for residents and visitors alike.
