Subscribe for Free Francisco Valenzuela, the Government Affairs and Community Relations Manager for the San Andreas Regional Center, addressed the council, emphasizing the importance of continued advocacy for services for individuals with developmental disabilities. He noted that California's Lanterman Act provides essential support, allowing individuals to receive services throughout their lives, unlike in many other states where support may end at age 22.
Valenzuela shared that the San Andreas Regional Center serves over 7,900 individuals diagnosed with autism in California, a significant increase from 7,000 individuals served 25 years ago. He stressed the need for ongoing education and resources to ensure that families have the support they need, particularly regarding housing and educational programs.
The meeting also highlighted the upcoming ninth annual Superhero Summer Festival, an event aimed at raising awareness and fostering community involvement. Valenzuela invited all residents of Santa Clara County to participate, reinforcing the message of inclusion and support for families with loved ones on the spectrum.
As the city moves forward with this proclamation, it underscores the importance of collaboration between local organizations and municipalities to enhance services and resources for individuals with developmental disabilities. The commitment to Autism Acceptance Month serves as a reminder of the community's role in promoting understanding and support for all its members.
