City Council evaluates ADA compliance for new electric vehicle charging stations

Loudoun County officials are making strides in promoting electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure while ensuring compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. During a recent Finance/Government Operations and Economic Development Committee meeting, discussions centered on the installation of EV charging stations at government facilities, emphasizing the importance of "government by example."

A key concern raised was the placement of these charging stations in relation to ADA-compliant parking spaces. One committee member highlighted the need for careful planning to avoid future conflicts between charging stations and ADA requirements. "We shouldn't ask businesses to do what we don't do ourselves," they stated, underscoring the county's commitment to leading by example.

County officials confirmed that while they are considering ADA needs, the current design does not allow for charging stations to occupy ADA spots due to spatial constraints. "We have taken that into consideration at every single location," an official noted, explaining that the proximity of charging stations to ADA spaces is a priority, even if they cannot be placed directly in those spots.

The committee also discussed ongoing assessments of parking layouts to enhance ADA accessibility across facilities. Plans are in place to increase the number of ADA-compliant spaces in other areas, ensuring that all visitors and employees have adequate access.

As Loudoun County continues to expand its EV infrastructure, the focus remains on balancing sustainability efforts with accessibility, setting a standard for other localities to follow.
