Millbrae City Council proclaims April 2025 as Arab American Heritage Month

The Millbrae City Council made significant strides in promoting cultural diversity and addressing community needs during its regular meeting on April 8, 2025. A key highlight was the proclamation of April 2025 as Arab American Heritage Month, recognizing the vital contributions of Arab Americans to the cultural, social, and economic fabric of Millbrae and the nation.

Councilmember Ronaldi emphasized the importance of this month as an opportunity for residents to celebrate the rich traditions, languages, and arts brought by the Arab American community. The proclamation aims to foster understanding and appreciation, promoting unity and inclusivity within Millbrae. Mr. Sharif Sikalt, a representative from the Arab Resource and Organizing Center, joined the meeting virtually to express gratitude for the recognition, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by Arab communities, including rising anti-Arab sentiment and the need for solidarity among diverse groups.

In addition to the cultural proclamation, City Manager Tom Williams provided updates on local developments, notably the arrival of ICON Therapeutics, Millbrae's first corporate headquarters. This biotech company, specializing in life cell research, is moving into a new six-story building at the intersection of Rollins Road and Millbrae Avenue, which will house approximately 400 employees. This development marks the beginning of a three-building project aimed at enhancing the local economy and job market.

Williams also informed the council about a new state law, Assembly Bill 413, which prohibits parking within 20 feet of any intersection to improve visibility and safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The city plans to implement this law locally and will provide further information to residents.

The meeting underscored the council's commitment to celebrating diversity and addressing community safety, setting a positive tone for future initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life in Millbrae.
