The City of Fair Oaks Ranch is taking significant steps to enhance its wastewater treatment capabilities, as discussed in the December 5, 2024, City Council meeting. Public Works Director Grant Watanabe presented a detailed update on the Phase 1 expansion project for the wastewater treatment plant, emphasizing the need for a new work authorization to progress from 30% design to final design and construction.

The expansion project aims to address immediate needs, including upgrades to the effluent pump station, the bottom of the hill lift station, and improvements to headworks odor control. Watanabe highlighted that the project will involve comprehensive services such as project management, surveying, and utility coordination, with a total estimated cost of $4.1 million.

A key finding from a recent water balance study indicated that the city’s current permit limits for effluent application to the golf course would soon be exceeded. The study recommends amending the permit to allow for an increase from 2 acre-feet per acre to 4 acre-feet per acre, accommodating future growth.

The effluent pump station upgrade will see the replacement of existing pumps with more powerful submersible pumps, enhancing the system's efficiency. Additionally, the bottom of the hill lift station will be equipped with larger solids handling pumps to mitigate clogging issues, while the headworks will receive corrosion-resistant improvements to manage odors effectively.

This expansion is crucial for supporting the city's growth and ensuring that wastewater management keeps pace with increasing demands.
