TGH proposes new hospital expansion in Citrus County to address growing patient needs

The Citrus County Board of County Commissioners convened on April 8, 2025, to discuss a significant proposal that could reshape healthcare access in the region. Currently, the two existing hospitals in Citrus County are located approximately 25 miles apart, often reaching capacity and diverting emergency patients to other facilities. With the anticipated population growth in the Citrus Hills area, which is expected to see thousands of new homes in the next five years, the need for expanded healthcare services has become increasingly urgent. TGH's proposal includes the acquisition of 53 acres of land adjacent to an existing freestanding emergency department, with plans to develop the site in two phases. This expansion aims to add 400 new hospital beds, two medical office buildings, and essential infrastructure, including a helipad for emergency transport.
