Grass Valley is set to enhance its animal welfare efforts through a new partnership between the Grass Valley Police Animal Services and the nonprofit organization Wayward Journey. During the City Council meeting on April 9, 2025, representatives from Wayward Journey presented their mission to improve the lives of shelter animals and support the Grass Valley Animal Shelter.
Wayward Journey, led by President Alex Maloney, aims to implement several key programs that will directly benefit the shelter and the community. The organization plans to manage volunteer and foster programs, provide funding for veterinary care, and host a community pet pantry to assist residents struggling to feed their pets. The initiative is expected to alleviate the workload of shelter staff, enhance animal care, and increase adoption rates.

This support is crucial, as the shelter currently operates with limited staff and resources. The foster program will provide temporary homes for animals in need, particularly young or medically vulnerable pets, allowing them to thrive outside the stressful shelter environment.
Additionally, Wayward Journey will facilitate a pet pantry, offering free pet food to community members as long as their pets are spayed or neutered. This program aims to strengthen community bonds while ensuring that pets receive the necessary care.
The City Council expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, recognizing the potential benefits for both the animals and the community. The proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the city and Wayward Journey is still under review, with plans to finalize it in the coming weeks.
This collaboration marks a significant step forward in Grass Valley's commitment to animal welfare, promising to enhance the quality of life for shelter animals and foster a more engaged community.
