Milwaukee accepts $164M grant to fund summer youth internship program

The Milwaukee Community and Economic Development Committee convened on April 9, 2025, to discuss significant initiatives aimed at enhancing youth employment opportunities in the city. A key focus of the meeting was the acceptance of over $164,000 in grant funds from Employ Milwaukee to support the city's Summer Youth Internship Program for 2025. This program is designed to provide paid internships for local youth aged 16 to 19, allowing them to gain valuable work experience in various city departments over an eight-week period.

Vanessa Armstrong, the Human Resources Administrator for the Department of City Development, highlighted that the funding will enable the city to hire 50 interns this summer, each earning $15 an hour. The program aims to foster youth development and employment, addressing the pressing need for job opportunities among young residents. Last year, the program served 87 interns, and there is optimism for increased participation this year, with recruitment efforts actively underway.

Committee members expressed their commitment to expanding the program's reach, particularly for older youth aged 18 to 24. Alderman Moore's advocacy for the "Earn and Learn" initiative was acknowledged, emphasizing the importance of providing opportunities for young adults in this age group. The committee discussed the potential for collaboration with other programs, such as Camp RISE, which serves younger participants aged 14 to 16.

In addition to the internship program, the committee explored promotional strategies to attract more applicants. Armstrong noted that outreach efforts include school presentations and distribution of flyers to city staff and community members. However, there is a recognition that more can be done to engage youth, particularly through local events and community centers.

The meeting concluded with a call for continued efforts to enhance youth employment opportunities in Milwaukee, underscoring the city's commitment to investing in its younger population. As the application deadline approaches, the committee remains hopeful that increased awareness and outreach will lead to a successful summer internship program, ultimately benefiting the community by equipping its youth with essential skills and work experience.
