Pasco County commissioners approve $7.5M budget amendment for new helicopters

The Pasco Board of County Commissioners convened on April 10, 2025, to discuss a significant proposal regarding the county's air fleet. This move aims to replace aging aircraft that are currently in service.

The remaining four helicopters, which are older models from the Vietnam era, are primarily used for parts. The sheriff's office plans to phase out these older helicopters, including two Hueys, which have limited market interest for resale.

Chase Daniels from the Pasco Sheriff's Office explained that the intention is to negotiate the purchase price down from the proposed upper limit of $7.5 million. The goal is to acquire both helicopters for a total cost that could be less than $7 million. The board expressed support for the acquisition, emphasizing the importance of maintaining operational capabilities for emergency services, including patient transport and firefighting operations.

Commissioners discussed the potential for offsetting the purchase costs through the salvage value of the helicopters being retired. There was a consensus that maintaining two operational helicopters would be sufficient, especially as the sheriff's office plans to expand its drone capabilities in the future.

The meeting concluded with a clear directive to proceed with the budget amendment and to ensure that all outdated helicopters are removed from service, streamlining the county's air fleet for improved efficiency and safety.
