Freeport declares April National Library Week to advocate for library funding

National Library Week took center stage at the Freeport City Council meeting on April 7, 2025, as Mayor Jody Miller declared the week a time to celebrate the vital role libraries play in the community. Emphasizing the theme "Drawn to the Library," Miller highlighted how libraries inspire creativity, foster lifelong learning, and serve as essential community hubs.

Miller passionately advocated for libraries, expressing concern over a recent executive order to defund the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). She warned that this decision could severely impact libraries nationwide, particularly in underserved areas. While Freeport's library does not receive direct funding from IMLS, Miller explained that state resources, including those from the Illinois State Library and the Prairie Cat consortium, rely on IMLS support. The loss of these funds could hinder access to vital resources and programs, including new technology for patrons.

Miller urged residents to advocate for libraries by contacting their representatives, stressing the importance of community support in maintaining library services. "Stand up and advocate for our library," she encouraged, underscoring the collective responsibility to ensure libraries continue to thrive.

In addition to the library discussions, the council also addressed several appointments to various city boards and commissions, including the Planning Commission and the Board of Zoning Appeals. The meeting concluded with a call for community engagement and support for local libraries during National Library Week.
