Framingham History Center proposes $119K for Library and Academy Building restorations

Historic preservation took center stage at the Framingham City Community Preservation Committee meeting on March 24, 2025, as key proposals aimed at restoring and safeguarding the city’s historic resources were presented. Kevin Swope led the discussion, outlining the criteria for funding projects that address the preservation of significant cultural and architectural sites.

Among the highlighted projects was the Edgell Memorial Library Woodwork Restoration, which seeks $30,000 in Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds. This initiative aims to restore the library's historic woodwork, including flooring and exterior doors, ensuring the building remains a vital community resource. The library, built as a memorial to local soldiers, is a cornerstone of Framingham's history and is specifically noted in the community preservation plan as needing restoration.

Swope emphasized the importance of adhering to the Secretary of the Interior's standards for rehabilitation, ensuring that the restoration work maintains the building's historical integrity. The committee unanimously approved the funding request, reflecting a strong commitment to preserving Framingham's heritage.

Another significant proposal discussed was the installation of a fire alarm system at the Old Academy Building, which dates back to 1837. This project, with a funding request of $89,000, aims to enhance safety and protect invaluable historical documents stored within the building. The Old Academy Building has served various educational purposes over the years and is crucial for the Framingham History Center's operations.
