Community members honored for resuscitating Alpena's Al Smith during birthday celebration

The Alpena City Council meeting on December 16, 2024, highlighted a remarkable community achievement in emergency response, recognizing the life-saving efforts of several individuals involved in the resuscitation of local resident Allen Smith. During a celebration for Smith's 80th birthday on November 2, he unexpectedly collapsed, prompting immediate action from bystanders and emergency services that ultimately saved his life.

City officials honored the quick response of citizens and first responders, detailing how the chain of survival—comprising early recognition, CPR, access to an automated external defibrillator (AED), and advanced medical care—was effectively executed. Registered nurse Brandy Lepine led the CPR efforts, while others, including Andy Perrin, Janae Rose, Chad Wright, Josh Smith, and Becky Thompson, played critical roles in retrieving and using the AED. Their actions, along with the swift response from Alpena City Fire personnel, ensured Smith received the necessary care, leading to his recovery.

Smith, who joined the meeting via Zoom from the hospital, expressed his gratitude to those who helped him during the emergency. He thanked the community for their support and the quick actions of the emergency responders, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and training in saving lives.

In addition to the recognition of the life-saving efforts, the meeting also featured the annual "Shout Out" program, celebrating city employees who have gone above and beyond in their duties. Several employees were acknowledged for their contributions, fostering a spirit of appreciation within the city workforce.

The council also discussed ongoing projects, including the River City Center, which is set to begin construction soon, and reminded attendees of the upcoming deadline for applications for an empty council seat.
