Waterford High School girls basketball team clinches third state championship title

The Ohio Senate meeting on April 9, 2025, celebrated the achievements of several high school and college basketball teams from the state. The session highlighted the Waterford High School girls basketball team, who recently claimed the Division 7 state championship, marking their third state title. The Wildcats secured a thrilling 48-46 victory over Fort Laramie, with standout performances from seniors Avery Wagner, Kendall Surrey, and Avery Smithberger, who collectively scored 39 points. Their season concluded with an impressive record of 27 wins and just one loss.

Additionally, the Wynton Woods girls basketball team was recognized for their remarkable undefeated season, finishing 27-0 and winning the Division 2 state championship. Under the guidance of Coach Colton Gray, the Warriors triumphed over White House Anthony Wayne with a score of 70-55. Freshman Strawberry Blankensy led the scoring with 28 points, supported by key contributions from her teammates.

The meeting also acknowledged the University of Akron Zips men's basketball team for their victory in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) tournament and their subsequent appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Zips, coached by John Gross, ended their season with a record of 28-6, securing their second consecutive MAC title with a dramatic buzzer-beater in the championship game.
