The Kennedale City Council took significant steps towards enhancing local recreational facilities during its meeting on February 18, 2024. A key decision was made to fund a preliminary study for the design and construction of new baseball and soccer fields, a move that aims to address the growing demand for youth sports in the community.
City Manager Daryl Dyer introduced the proposal, which involves a collaboration with Callahan and Freeman Architects. The plan includes the refurbishment of existing baseball fields and the addition of two small soccer fields, responding to community feedback indicating a strong interest in soccer for children under 12. The total funding for this initiative is drawn from a $3 million bond approved by residents in 2023.
The proposed changes will take place at Sonora Park, where the existing baseball fields will be reconfigured to accommodate the new soccer fields. The project also includes plans for a new concession and restroom building, which will serve as a welcoming entry point to the park. The council emphasized the importance of this project, noting that it has been a long time coming, with discussions dating back to 2019.
Council members expressed concerns about the condition of the current fields, which have not been utilized for several years. They highlighted the need for a thorough land survey to ensure proper drainage and accessibility, which will be part of the preliminary study. The council is keen to avoid repeating past mistakes and emphasized the importance of moving forward efficiently to avoid further delays.
In addition to the baseball and soccer fields, the council also discussed the Valley Lane Steambank Stabilization Project, which requires an environmental impact assessment due to federal funding regulations. This amendment, costing $111,000, was also approved unanimously.
The council's decisions reflect a commitment to improving recreational facilities for Kennedale's youth, aiming to foster a vibrant community through enhanced sports opportunities. As the city moves forward with these projects, residents can expect to see tangible improvements in their local parks and recreational offerings in the near future.
