Newton County Library Board appeals for funding amid staffing and budget crises

Newton County officials are grappling with significant budget challenges as they consider funding for the local library system during a recent meeting on April 8, 2025. The library, which has seen its staff shrink from 41 to just 12 over the years, is struggling to maintain operations amid rising costs, particularly for insurance.

Reverend Yvonne English, co-chair of the library board, passionately appealed for increased funding, emphasizing the essential role libraries play in the community. She highlighted the urgent need for financial support to cover basic operational costs and to ensure that library staff can continue to provide vital services. "If we are having trouble covering raising insurance costs and overall costs, we are failing our libraries and library staff," she stated.

Commissioner Long acknowledged the library's plight, noting that he has been actively engaging with community members to understand their needs. He expressed concern over the library's reduced hours compared to surrounding counties and emphasized the importance of having trained staff to manage library operations effectively.

The discussion also touched on the need for revitalizing volunteer efforts, particularly the "Friends of the Library" group, which previously played a crucial role in supporting library activities. However, library officials clarified that while volunteers are helpful, they cannot replace the need for professional staff trained in library science.

Commissioner Mason reassured library advocates that the board is committed to finding a way to enhance funding for the library, but he also reminded them that all county departments are vying for limited resources. He explained that funding decisions are influenced by property tax revenues and community development, which can impact the overall budget available for libraries and other essential services.
