Camarillo Council approves Berry Street affordable housing project for homeless support

In a significant step towards addressing the affordable housing crisis in Camarillo, the City Council discussed two key housing projects during their regular meeting on April 9, 2025. These initiatives aim to provide essential support for the city’s most vulnerable residents, particularly those experiencing homelessness.

Community Development Director David Sanchez introduced the projects, highlighting their strategic proximity—located less than 100 feet apart on Berry Street and Arneal Avenue. This close coordination is designed to create a seamless pathway for individuals transitioning from homelessness to stable housing. The Berry Street project will feature six temporary housing units, while the Arneal site will offer nine permanent units, both supported by Project Hope, a local organization dedicated to assisting those in need.

Lisette Torres, a representative from Project Hope, emphasized the urgency of these projects, noting the lack of affordable housing options in Ventura County. She explained that many individuals facing homelessness struggle with barriers such as low credit scores and insufficient income, which complicates their ability to secure permanent housing. The new units will serve as a crucial waypoint in the housing continuum, allowing Project Hope to place clients directly into stable accommodations.

The Berry Street site, acquired by the city in 2024, will include modern, detached units equipped with essential amenities. Designed to blend in with the surrounding residential area, these units will provide a temporary solution while residents work towards finding permanent housing. The city plans to install these units with minimal landscaping to maintain a residential appearance.

The council's approval of the grant acceptance and professional services agreement for the Berry Street project aligns with Camarillo's broader goals of enhancing housing support and addressing homelessness. The initiatives reflect a commitment to interagency collaboration and community-driven solutions, responding directly to identified housing needs within the city.
