Mount Diablo Unified School District approves resolutions for drug awareness and social work week

The Mount Diablo Unified School District Board made significant strides in addressing community health and educational support during their recent meeting on February 26, 2025. The board unanimously approved a resolution recognizing Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Month, highlighting the urgent need to combat the rising crisis of opioid overdoses. In 2023 alone, there were over 22,000 emergency room visits related to opioid overdoses and more than 7,000 deaths linked to fentanyl. The resolution encourages community members to participate in the upcoming National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 26, 2025, emphasizing the importance of safe medication disposal to prevent misuse.

Trustee Kelly Perkins, who has been vocal about the dangers of fentanyl following the tragic overdose of students in Santa Rosa, underscored the resolution's importance. She shared her personal experience of losing her son to fentanyl, reinforcing the message that "1 pill can kill." The board's commitment to raising awareness about prescription drug abuse is seen as a crucial step in protecting students and the wider community.

In addition to addressing drug abuse, the board also approved a resolution in support of National School Social Work Week, which will take place from March 2 to 8, 2025. The board aims to promote the theme "Social Work: Compassion + Action," highlighting the need for compassionate support in educational settings.

Furthermore, the board proclaimed March as Women's History Month, encouraging schools to incorporate instructional materials that reflect the contributions of women throughout history.
