In a pivotal meeting held on April 11, 2025, the San Bernardino Planning Commission addressed significant developments in the city, including the approval of a new Planet Fitness health club. The atmosphere in the room was charged with anticipation as commissioners gathered to discuss the future of a vacant commercial site at 112 West Fortieth Street, a location that has seen better days.
The proposal, presented by Assistant Planner Christian James Colosan, aims to transform a once-thriving commercial center into a modern fitness facility. This site, which previously housed a laundry, restaurant, and convenience store, was left in disrepair after a fire led to its demolition in 2021. The new development, covering approximately 17,962 square feet, is designed to cater to the community's growing demand for health and wellness options.

However, the proximity to residential areas necessitated a thorough review by the Planning Commission. The proposed Planet Fitness will operate 24 hours a day and will include 21 additional parking spaces, bringing the total to 358 spaces on the property.
During the meeting, the commission voted on the staff's recommendation to adopt resolution number 2025-19, which found the project categorically exempt from further environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act. The vote passed with a majority of 4 to 1, indicating strong support for the initiative despite some concerns raised by Vice Chair Quill.
The proposed design of the fitness center features modern architectural elements, including varied roof lines and decorative lighting, aimed at enhancing the visual appeal of the site. Additionally, landscaping plans include the planting of trees to buffer the facility from neighboring residential properties, addressing community concerns about aesthetics and potential disturbances.
As the meeting concluded, the commissioners expressed optimism about the project’s potential to revitalize the area and provide much-needed services to residents. The approval marks a significant step forward in San Bernardino's ongoing efforts to enhance community health and improve local infrastructure. With the Planet Fitness project set to move forward, residents can look forward to new opportunities for fitness and wellness in their neighborhood.
