San Clemente recreation department unveils spring events and new community banner program

The San Clemente Beaches, Parks, and Recreation Commission held a meeting on April 8, 2025, where several community-focused initiatives were discussed, highlighting the city’s commitment to enhancing local recreational opportunities.

One of the standout topics was the upcoming tree planting event, which aims to engage residents in beautifying the community. Volunteers from various local organizations, including the San Clemente Garden Club and the Kiwanis Club, will join city staff to plant 15 to 20 large trees. This initiative not only promotes environmental stewardship but also fosters community spirit as residents come together to contribute to their local parks.

In addition to the tree planting, the commission celebrated the success of recent recreational events. The annual fishing derby at the municipal pier attracted over 200 participants, marking a record turnout. Sponsored by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, the event provided free fishing poles to attendees, creating a fun and competitive atmosphere for families and children.

Looking ahead, the commission announced several upcoming events designed to engage the community. The "Sensational Springtacular" and "Splashtacular" events on April 19 will feature an egg hunt and unique underwater activities at the Aquatic Center. Additionally, the 35th annual Cinco de Mayo celebration will take place on the first Saturday of May, promising entertainment and family-friendly activities.

The meeting also introduced a pilot program for temporary community street banners, aimed at providing local organizations with a platform to promote events. This initiative is expected to streamline signage in high-traffic areas, making it easier for residents to learn about community happenings while maintaining a clean aesthetic.

As the commission continues to plan and execute these initiatives, they remain focused on enhancing the quality of life for San Clemente residents through active participation and community engagement. The next steps will involve gathering feedback on the banner program and preparing for the busy spring and summer event season.
