McLean County Board approves animal service fee increases to enhance program sustainability

During the meeting, Treasurer McNeil reported that expenses for the county's self-insurance plan had risen to $1,989,405 in the first three months of 2025, an increase of $163,000 compared to the same period last year. The current stop-loss fee stands at $382,878.88, with expectations that claims will adjust as the year progresses. McNeil also noted that an ongoing audit is in progress, with completion anticipated by July, rather than June, as initially hoped.

The committee then welcomed Marchelle Thompson, the Director of Animal Control, who presented a request for approval of an ordinance to amend the county code regarding fees for animal services. Thompson explained that the proposed fee increases are necessary to maintain the sustainability and effectiveness of animal service programs. The adjustments are designed to align with industry standards, account for rising costs of materials and medications, and promote owner accountability in compliance with state regulations.

After a brief discussion, the committee voted unanimously in favor of the ordinance to amend the fee structure, ensuring that the county's animal services can continue to operate effectively.
