The Calvert County Public Schools Board of Education meeting on April 10, 2025, began with a commendation for the achievements of local students at the SkillsUSA Maryland State Championships. Over 600 students from across Maryland participated in the 52nd annual event, showcasing their skills in various technical and leadership competitions.
The board recognized the exceptional performance of Calvert County Career and Technical Education (CTE) students, who participated in 31 competitions. The board highlighted the dedication of teachers, industry mentors, and volunteers who prepared these students for success. Notably, the CTA SkillsUSA chapter was acknowledged as a gold chapter of excellence for its effective implementation of the SkillsUSA framework.

Subscribe for Free The board officially commended 37 students who earned bronze, silver, or gold awards at the championships, celebrating their accomplishments and representation of excellence in education and career readiness. Additionally, the board extended best wishes to nine competitors who earned gold medals and will advance to the national leadership and skills competition, along with two students selected as national voting delegates.
Assistant Principal Brian Sammons expressed gratitude to the teachers and sponsors for their hard work and emphasized the focus on student leadership throughout the SkillsUSA events. He then introduced Charlie Lewis, the SkillsUSA president at the Career and Technology Academy (CTA), who shared further accomplishments. Lewis noted that 24 students attended the fall leadership conference, and CTA hosted a successful regional competition. At the state competition, 85 CTA students competed, bringing home five gold, nine silver, and five bronze medals. Lewis announced that ten students and six advisers will represent Calvert County at the national competition in Atlanta, Georgia, in June.
The meeting concluded with a motion to approve the commendations, which was unanimously supported by the board. The recognition of these students underscores the commitment of Calvert County Public Schools to fostering career and technical education and preparing students for future success in their chosen fields.
