Seabrook City Council has taken significant steps towards enhancing the community's recreational offerings, particularly with the proposed redesign of the Pelican Bay Aquatic Center. During the January 7, 2025, regular meeting, the council reviewed options presented by Progressive Commercial Aquatics, which included three distinct design concepts for the facility.
The presentation highlighted the results of a community survey conducted in May 2024, which gathered feedback from 188 residents. A notable 90% of respondents expressed interest in expanding leisure and recreational spaces at the aquatic facility. The survey indicated a strong desire for features such as open water swimming, competitive swimming, and various water sports, alongside a preference for shaded areas and play structures.

Option A focuses on refurbishing the existing splash pad and constructing a new six-lane, 25-yard lap pool, estimated to cost between $2.6 million and $3.3 million. Option B introduces a leisure pool with a beach entry and interactive play structures, with costs projected between $3.6 million and $4 million. The most ambitious Option C includes a larger leisure pool with additional amenities, estimated at $4.4 million to $5 million.
Council members discussed the importance of ensuring ADA accessibility in the designs, particularly for the lap pool. The proposed plans also include considerations for operational aspects, such as the potential for a season pass for residents, which could enhance community engagement with the facility.
In addition to the aquatic center discussions, the council unanimously approved a six-month extension for an agreement with Driver and Rescue Club LLC, allowing for continued conditional exceptions to various codes at their facility on NASA Parkway. This extension aims to provide the company with the necessary time to complete improvements without undue pressure.
The council's decisions reflect a commitment to enhancing recreational facilities in Seabrook, with the aquatic center redesign poised to offer residents improved access to leisure activities and community engagement opportunities in the near future. Further discussions and community input will continue as the project moves forward.
