Chelan County uses live incident map to aid fire evacuation efforts

Leavenworth City officials are taking significant steps to enhance wildfire preparedness in the region, as highlighted during a recent workshop held on April 11, 2025. The meeting brought together local leaders and community members to discuss strategies and resources aimed at mitigating wildfire risks.

One of the key developments discussed was the introduction of a live incident map on the Chelan County emergency management webpage. This tool allows residents to view real-time fire perimeters and evacuation levels by entering their addresses. This initiative aims to reduce the volume of calls to the 911 dispatch center, particularly from property owners who reside outside the area but are concerned about their homes during wildfire events.

Patrick Haggerty, the Forestry and Fire Program Manager for the Cascadia Conservation District, emphasized the importance of community engagement in wildfire preparedness. He noted that the district has updated its Community Wildfire Protection Plan, which now includes input from 21 organizations, including local fire districts and public health officials. This collaborative effort aims to enhance the region's resilience against wildfires.

Haggerty also introduced several programs designed to assist homeowners in making their properties more fire-resistant. These include a home hardening program that offers rebates for retrofitting homes to withstand fire, as well as educational initiatives focused on creating defensible spaces around properties. He highlighted that most homes are lost not to direct flames but to embers, underscoring the need for proactive measures.

The workshop also featured discussions on the role of prescribed fire as a tool for managing wildfire risks. Colin Sternangle, who manages the Cascade Prescribed Burn Association, explained that controlled burns can help reduce fuel loads and promote healthy ecosystems. He stressed the historical significance of fire in maintaining ecological balance and the need for community involvement in prescribed burning efforts.

As the region prepares for the upcoming fire season, these initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach to wildfire management, combining technology, community engagement, and ecological practices. Local officials are optimistic that these efforts will enhance safety and resilience for residents in Leavenworth and surrounding areas.
