Chris Merritt showcases historic arastra at Old Iron Town in Iron County Utah

Utah State Historic Preservation Officer Chris Merritt recently visited the historic site of Old Iron Town in Iron County, highlighting its significance in the region's early iron production. During his visit, Merritt showcased an arastra, a traditional ore processing technology that originated in Spain and was adapted for use in the Intermountain West.

The arastra, a circular basin designed for grinding, played a crucial role in the iron extraction process. It was filled with a mixture of powdered sand, limestone, and iron ore. A horse or a person would walk in a circle, pulling a large stone that ground the materials into a fine powder. This powder was essential for producing iron, making the arastra a vital tool for early settlers in Cedar City and surrounding areas.

Merritt's enthusiasm for the site underscores its historical importance, as Old Iron Town was pivotal in the establishment of Cedar City and other settlements in Utah.
