During the recent Board of County Commissioners meeting on April 10, 2025, significant discussions centered around the proposed expansion of the Kootenai County landfill, a project that has been in the works since 2017. The expansion aims to address the growing waste management needs of the community, with projections indicating that the current landfill will reach capacity in approximately 17 years. The proposed expansion could extend this capacity by an additional decade, allowing for an estimated 9.2 million cubic yards of solid waste storage.
The landfill, located in the southwest quadrant of Kootenai County, is set to expand on the west side of Highway 95, encompassing approximately 490 acres across 13 parcels. This expansion includes the construction of a new south cell and modifications to the existing west cell, which will integrate better with the new area. The current proposal is designed to ensure that the landfill continues to meet the community's needs while minimizing visual and environmental impacts.

Subscribe for Free Commissioners noted that the topographical features of the site would likely shield the expansion from view, reducing potential concerns from nearby residential areas. However, the proposal is not without its challenges, as there are wetlands in the area that will need to be carefully considered during the review process.
In addition to the landfill discussions, the meeting also touched on various community development initiatives, emphasizing the county's commitment to sustainable growth and responsible waste management. As Kootenai County continues to evolve, the decisions made in these meetings will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the community and its environmental stewardship. The next steps will involve further assessments and public input as the county moves forward with the landfill expansion project.
